Office Communicator 2007

My company upgraded to Office Communicator 2007 as our standard messaging platform from Communicator 2005. One of the features of 2005 that was nice was the 'appear offline' mode. This allowed me to get work done without people bothering me but I could monitor for when someone came on that I may need to talk to; the classic lurker situation.

Enter Communicator 2007. With this I quickly realized that the feature was not there. Bumming I quickly went to find out if it was possible. Turns out the team left it off on purpose but like any good programming team made it so that it can be enabled. First though, the reasons why they did not enable it are worth noting so here they are:

Microsoft's Tom Laciano writes on his post:

It reduces the value of presence if everyone is lurking/hiding as “Appear Offline” (e.g. imagine if everyone in the company did it). Within working hours there is no reason to use “Appear Offline” as opposed to DnD
Once you go beyond OC as an IM client and think about OC as a phone it doesn’t make much sense to use “Appear Offline” as that will cause all phone calls and such to go to voicemail. It is also not a very good way to hide anymore given than everyone is expected to have a phone and so you won’t see very many people as offline anymore (i.e. there is no reason to see someone as offline as their phone should always be connected so at worst they should be away)

Ok. Now that you know why and you have given it careful consideration, here is how to re-enable it:

Open registry editor and go to the following registry entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator
Add the following key to above mentioned entry
EnableAppearOffline (Type:DWORD), set value to 1 to enable status option
Now close the registry editor and restart Microsoft Office Communicator 2007, new status option should now be available.

One thing to note, this can be overridden by group policy.

Enjoy your newly found lurker status.

Using the Copy Database Wizard - Upgrading from SQL 2005 to 2008 Database

I spent the better part of today messing with Hyper-V and cloning to my heart's content. I am now officially running 2K8 / IIS 7 on all my dev servers. While this is not a big deal, one thing I wanted to do was also get and play with SQL 2K8. This was certainly an eye opening experience. Since I am not one to RTFM, I just went for it. First, after reading the differences between all the new versions of SQL, I decided that I wanted to try the Web version since it was all I seemed to need. I got this running on one of my clones and immediately tried to migrate over some of the databases I had on my 2005 dev machine. I first tried to use the Copy Database wizard and this failed; I was getting permissions issues. I then detached the database and physically moved the files over to the 2K8 SQL Server. When I tried to attach this time, I got an error saying that the file was read only. I checked the file and indeed it was *not* read-only.

So what is the issue? It turns out that I had logged in with Windows Auth to the server and as such, my user account did not have modify rights on the log file. Once I changed the CACLs on the file and retried the operation everything attached correctly and I was immediately up and running in my dev environment.

Prism RC Released

Glenn Block has announced that the Prism RC has dropped. You can get it from here.

Prism is the next generation in composite application guidance. If you are building clients for the desktop, this framework can help you tremendously. It was built to be agnostic of any frameworks. So you can chose your own IOC container, your own logger etc. For those of us who did not like CAB for some of these reasons this looks to be the way to go.

I got the chance to chat with Glenn at the 'Ask the Experts' series given at Tech-Ed this year and was impressed with all that they had done to make it so that shops could continue to use the application services that they are used to using. I am sure once I get into it, there will be something I don't like, but it sure beats writing it from the ground up.

Go out and get it....and let me know what you think.

Migrating from Virtual Server to Hyper-V Tips and Gotchas

So since my recent shift to Server 2008, I have noticed some subtle but important nuances between Virtual Server 2005 and Hyper-V. The main thing I have noticed is that the "Integration Tools" (hyper-v term) also known as Virtual Machine Additions in Virtual PC/Server world is not compatible with Virtual Machine additions. This means that the following has to be done for each virtual machine that you are 'Migrating':

Make sure that you are at the terminal since you can not use mouse capturing in over RDC when using Hyper-V VM. (gotcha #1)
Open each VM that you want to install Integration Tools on.
Uninstall Virtual Machine Additions (Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs) (reboot required).
From the action menu of an open session choose 'Insert Integration Services Setup Disk'
The auto installer then runs and has told me every time that I needed to upgrade my HAL for that to work...One more reboot.
Then when it comes back the integration services finishes running.

You now have a machine that everyone will be able to terminal serve into. Some additional notes.

The integration services disk does not support Vista 64 bit. All vista machined need to be service pack 1 and xp needs to have service pack 3 installed.

In the end, the pain I am going through in changing this is over to Hyper-V based virtual machines will hopefully be worth it. Of course I am not sure how portable the images will be if I try to take them locally with my and my laptop running Virtual PC. I hope the next version of Virtual anything supports the proper formats.

[UPDATE]

I was thinking I may have missed something in my own learning adventures so I decided to Google around and see if I did. I came across these links:

Drew Hill's post with his own experiences. He calls out to remove static IP's. This is a good tip, though I did not fall into the trap since I have a MAC assigned IP. I did need to emulate the MAC again on each of the machine's adapters.

Aaron suggests that it will be a pain to migrate between the two platforms. Something I was afraid of.

My Hyper-V Setup

So in trying to keep up with the hardware aspects of my job, I have recently taken the plunge into Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V. I first started with my laptop. A Dell Latitude D630. After I converted it and played around with Hyper-V I was convinced that I was ready to upgrade my main file server to the 2K8 OS. In it's current form it was a dual proc 2.8Ghz with 8GB of RAM and my 2.75TB RAID 5EE array. I thought it would be the perfect machine to house my virtual home network (shared PC's, web servers, active directory etc.). So I went through the hassle of installing all that and came to find out that the Opteron 280 series processors do not support virtualization.

I was bummed. I had such grand plans. Luckily I had a spare XW9400 lying around. The specs on it were much better. Dual Dual core 2218 series processors and 14GB of RAM but it only had a mirrored 500GB drive. More importantly it was my main home workstation and I had all my multimedia apps and codecs installed on it.

I decided to take the plunge and move all the hardware around; to move the mirrored 500GB drives from the 9400 to the 9300 and the 6 750GB drives and the raid controller and put that in the 9400. Once that was all done, I had to do some reconfiguring and such but I finally had the 9400 Installed with DC, Hyper-V and File Server roles (I will probably also make this a backup server as well since it has the storage array attached.

My 9300 needs to be re-installed now with Vista 64 and I will need to upgrade the video card to run my multimedia applications. I will continue to use this to process images and videos.

My next goals are to install a farm of machines that I can use to do some skunk works type of training on some of the latest MS has to offer. I will start with SharePoint development; focusing on how one can create generic deployable features that can be used to act on data in lists etc.

I also want to look into how Groove works in the enterprise. I have used it in the past for years and loved the ability to keep different PC's sync'd with each other. In the enterprise it could me even more real time collaboration within the distributed team.

Windows 2008 Server on Dell D630 Notebook

So in trying to stay relevant and on the tail end of some sessions that I saw at tech-ed about some of the new IIS7.0 features, I have decided to install Windows Server 2008 Standard x64 on my Dell Inspiron D630 as a host operating system. When it finally RTM's I will also install SQL Server 2008.

The install went flawlessly and I was up and installed in minutes.

Next, I wanted to get it to run like a workstation. I had heard of some sites that told you how to do this and came across what I think is the most comprehensive. Here it is. This covers everything from disabling shut down tracker, to setting up the aero desktop experience and more.

I added the following roles to my machine:

Application Server
File Services
Hyper-V
Network Policy and Access
Web Server (IIS)

I also added the following features:

.NET Framework 3.0
Desktop Experience
Remote Server Admin Tools
Telnet Client
Windows Power Shell
Process Activation Service
Wireless LAN Service

Since I want to save my host OS to only run SQL 2008, I decided that I would create some VM's. So I started by creating a Vista 64 bit machine and another Windows 2008 Machine. When I went to install the integration services (the mouse and keyboard integration) on my Vista machine, it said it was not supported. Bummer since having to press Ctrl+Alt+<ANYTHING> is too many keys. So I installed the 32 bit instead. I will use this as my environment when I need word processing and presentations and the like.

Next I need to figure out how base images on vhd files works. Hopefully it is the same as in 2005 so I can just migrate my server to Hyper-V. More on that later.

Installing TFS 2008 on Windows Server 2008

I just completed the install of single-tier Team Foundation Server 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 Standard environment. This installation is slightly different from installing in a Windows Server 2003 environment. I ran into the dreaded 28100 error, but after rebuilding again and changing a few items, the install worked fine.

For the most part, follow the TFS install guide to the letter. There are a few slight deviations:

When installing IIS, follow the Reporting Services 2005 requirements. This includes a few additional things that need to be installed.

When installing the .NET 3.0 components, only install the .NET 3.0 framework. Do not install any additional features!

Note that in Windows 2008 you must install Sharepoint WITH SP1 before installing TFS 2008. After following the instructions, navigate to both the Central Admin and site on port 80 and ensure that your "TFSAdmin" account has admin rights in both locations. In my setup, it was configured correctly in Central Admin, but not on the main site. I had to add the TFS Admin account as a site collection administrator.

To run this in VS 2008, simply copy these files to the same place in the Visual Studio 2008; I had to create the 'Addin' folder. Then open and edit the '.addin' file and replace the value of 8 in the two 'Version' elements with the value of 9. Then save the file and restart VS2008. That should be all there is to it.

Vista - User Profile Was Not Loaded Correctly

My problem was solved using this technique:

Restart your PC to release the locks on your profile.

Log on with another administrative account

Delete C:\Users\%username%

Delete C:\Users\TEMP

Delete the registry key matching your SID from NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList". Blackjack). On my Dell D810 the Dell card was using a Toshiba Bluetooth stack which did support a list of Bluetooth profiles.

No thanks to Dell Support, I finally found a somewhat recently released Bluetooth stack from Toshiba, that I could install on my machine and would recognize the PAN profile. The installers can be found here. This link has the both the 32 and 64 bit versions. Unfortunately, the download speed is a bit slow so be patient. You can find the 32 bit version on the US site.

The process seems to be quite straight forward with a bit of a twist. Here is what I did.

Downloaded the proper version of the Bluetooth stack from Toshiba's site.

Remove the current Bluetooth stack.

From device manager, right click on the Bluetooth radio's and click 'uninstall'. In my device manager I saw both the Dell 360 Bluetooth Radio and the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator. I removed the Dell entry first then the Microsoft entry.

Run the installer for the Toshiba stack.

Once the stack installs you may need to restart.

After your install is complete you can get your phone ready to be 'found' and initiate the sync.

The laptop finds the phone and finds the 'Network Access Point' profile (PAN).

The from there you can use the Internet Connection application that is on the phone. Set it to use Bluetooth instead of USB and initiate the connection from the notebook.

Lastly, there is the issue of being able to Active Sync your phone with your laptop. On the initial discovery the laptop is missing the profile of 'Active Sync'. Instead it simply says 'Serial Port'. Thanks to someone else that had the same problem I found that if I could make an edit to the registry and viola. The key is:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\

Change the 'Serial Port' key from what is probably 'bluetooth' to the COM port that Toshiba uses for serial communication; COM7 in my case. You can read more about it here.

Update: I also found this link has a decent set of screen shots.

Enable RSS Option for Outlook 2007

I am posting this for those that would like to learn about options that can be restricted (or unrestricted) from an Office 2007 installation. First a little background. After installing Outlook 2007 I realized that I could not use RSS. I would get a message stating something to the affect that "You cannot use RSS. Your system administrator has turned off the feature." To me it sounded a bit like the Office Policy Templates that I had heard about. Turns out this was not the case. Big Brother really didn't seem to care. What was really happening here is that my registry needed a bit of adjusting. Thanks to Jose Barreto's experience with something similar I was able to deduce that I needed to tweak HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\RSS\Disable = 0 from 1. When this happens its a bit annoying because it becomes a challenge to remove it. A little Google-ing finally came up with a solid answer.

Issue:

Past Reminders keep firing with below errors every time Outlook is opened.
while dismiss them- "Cannot turn off the reminder. You may be reminded again. the end date you entered occurs before the start date"
Here is the solution for future reference:

Download MFCMAPI tool from http://support.microsoft.com/?ID=291794
1. Run MFCMAPI on the desktop
2. Go to Session->Logon and Display Store Table
3. Select your profile
4. Select Mailbox
5. Expand "Root Container"
6. Right click “Reminders" and select "Open Contents Table"
7. New Window Launches with Title Reminders
8. Select all the reminder items listed there, Right click and select "Delete Message"
9. Close MFCMAPI
Ø Reopened Outlook and don't find the past Reminders firing again. The issue got resolved.

Vista 64 Bit on Latitude D630

So I finally got my new Latitude D630 Today. I like it. Sleek, light and runs much cooler than my D810. It did not come without some challenges though. I was having an issue where on a soft restart (not powering off first) vista would BSOD. While the article below did not pertain to my laptop it did solve the issue that I was specifically facing. I am now running Vista 64 bit 4GB ram. With an Experience Score of 4.0. Gotta love that.

Stop 0x0000007B on Select Desktop and Portable N-Series Systems with AHCI Enabled in BIOS

Journal ID:
07313KLDCV
Article ID:
328881
Date Published:
9/4/2007
Last Revised:
10/28/2007
Table of Contents
Overview
Change the SATA Operation Setting from RAID Autodetect / AHCI to RAID Autodetect / ATA in System Setup
Dell Solution Network: Knowledge Base Article
» Overview
Some Dell™ N-Series systems ship with both ATA and AHCI support. Both are methods for communicating with the hard drive. AHCI has benefits above standard ATA mode that increase performance. Microsoft® Windows® XP does not support AHCI mode by default, which causes the STOP 0x0000007B error message if AHCI mode is enabled before the AHCI driver is installed. Also resetting the factory defaults in the System Setup will return the value to AHCI.
AHCI mode is enabled by default from the factory and AHCI mode is the default setting in System Setup on the following N-Series systems:

Dimension™ E520
OptiPlex™ 755
Latitude™ D630
Inspiron™ 1420
Inspiron 1520
Inspiron 1720
Vostro™ 1400
Vostro 1500
Dell Precision™ Workstation M1330

To work around this issue, enable ATA mode.
» Change the SATA Operation Setting from RAID Autodetect / AHCI to RAID Autodetect / ATA in System Setup
To change the SATA Operation settings in the System Setup (BIOS), perform the following steps:

Restart the computer.
Press the <F2> key on the keyboard immediately after the keyboard LEDs flash to enter the BIOS (System Setup).
In the System Setup screen, press the <Up> or <Down> arrow keys to highlight the Drives section, and then press the <Enter> key.
Press the <Up> or <Down> arrow keys to highlight the SATA Operation section, and then press the <Enter> key.
Press the <Left> or <Right> arrow keys to highlight RAID Autodetect / ATA, and then press the <Enter> key.
Press the <Esc> key to exit the System Setup.
Press the <Left> or <Right> arrow keys to highlight Save/Exit, and then press the <Enter> key.
